Some residents are shocked to learn that one valley county is considered one of the poorest in the state.

Fox 2 News takes a look at some of factors that could be contributing to the ranking.

For some it’s hard to believe that Starr County: a vast land with a population of about 60,000 residents is also the poorest in Texas, but according to the U.S. Census Bureau 39% of residents live in poverty compared to national level of only 17%.

A local teacher thinks that part of the problem is the lack of education.

Additional factors such as the high rate of violence could be affecting the area, like the spillover crime from México, but this also comes as an advantage to the area’s economy.
