Pope Francis celebrates his first birthday as pope. The pontiff turned 77 years old Tuesday.

He is choosing to celebrate in a quiet fashion. The Catholic News Service describes the celebrations as “low key.” He conducted the daily morning mass and had breakfast with several homeless men who live on the streets near the Vatican, conducting a normal work day.

A surprise choice, Pope Francis was elected to the Vatican back in March, making him the first non-European pontiff in nearly 1,300 years.
