Cameron County launched an aggressive, all-out initiative against illegal gambling earlier this year. And another dismantling of these so-called “eight liners” marked its halfway point.
County officials say an underground establishment in Santa Maria was taken down along HWY 281 near FM-506– outfitted with a hidden entrance, as well as an escape route for patrons.
Twenty three eight-liner machines were seized in Tuesday night’s raid. Operation Bishop began in April. District Attorney Luis Saenz says the past 9 months has contributed to the shutdown of about 97% of illegal gambling businesses in Cameron County.
