A state congressional committee on human trafficking gathered this morning in La Joya to address policies and penal codes to help deter immigrant smuggling.
Texas legislators who are part the committee heard testimonies from state health departments, law enforcement and the public regarding the smuggling and trafficking of individuals for the purpose of labor and sex exploitation.
Officials recognize that the Rio Grande Valley is the epicenter of illegal crossings of both adults and minors.
The committee is expected to reconvene once again in one of Texas’ major cities before the Texas legislature returns to regular session in January.
