The holiday season usually comes with long lines and heavy traffic while trying to make your last minute shopping. However, there are some benefits.

While many people are preparing to travel, visit family and decorate the house with bright lights, December is a great time for the unemployed to continue with their job search. The extended hours and great sales that go on November through December not only help you save a buck but can help bring more dollars to your pocket.

“During the holidays more jobs are created and it gives people the opportunity to get experience and in fact help them have a permanent job for next year,” said Victor Deleon from Workforce Solutions.

In fact, according to www.about.com between 25% and 50% of the total annual retail sales take place during the holidays, and retail employers usually increase their workforce by about 4%. Major retailers such as Macys, Target and Wal-Mart are looking to hire 50,000 to 70,000 seasonal employers due to the holidays.

A great way to keep an eye on those open positions is by heading online. Many retailers have websites where you can submit your applications.

“We tend to see the unemployment rate drop during this time and it’s great for the community because it brings revenue for everyone,” said Deleon.

Many stores also have help wanted signs on the door so you can also just go in and apply if you are looking for a job.
