Robert “Bobby” Maldonado went from a person of the law to possibly spending time behind bars, following money laundering charges with ties to a Mexican cartel.
The former DPS officer and constable candidate for Hidalgo’s precinct 1, was brought to federal court in McAllen in relation to his arrest on February of 2012 in Victoria, Texas.
DPS troopers detained him after finding 1 million dollars in cash in the back of his vehicle. The money was presumably to be used to pay Gulf Cartel members and help finance his now failed election campaign.
Sources close to the investigation tell Fox 2, Maldonado had been investigated for some time until an anonymous tip led authorities to South Carolina to collect the money and transport it back to Texas.
Following his arrest last year, Maldonado paid a 250-thousand dollar bond and had pending charges, until now. The judge also ordered Maldonado to remain in custody for the next 3 days until his next hearing where he will determine whether or not he is to issue a bond.
