The Food and Drug Administration proposes to gradually phase out all trans fats as they are a threat to public health.

FDA Commissioner, Doctor Margaret Hamburg says this move could prevent 20,000 heart attacks a year and prevent 7,000 deaths.

Fox News Medical “A” Team’s Doctor Manny Alvarez, says trans fats have no place in a healthy diet.

Foods containing unapproved food additives are considered adulterated under U.S. law, meaning they can’t be sold here.

There is no timeline for the phase out to begin and the proposal is subject to a two-month public comment period.

Trans fats are widely considered the worst kind of fat for your heart.

They are often found in processed foods, refrigerated dough and ready-to-use-frostings.

Many fast food chains have already phased out trans fats from their products.
