EDINBURG – A high-speed pursuit Monday morning caused the lockdown of two elementary schools in the city of Edinburg.

Police say it happened after a driver of a truck allegedly drove over the speed limit of a school zone, near the Raul Longoria and Freddy Gonzalez intersection. Officers tried pulling over the driver, but he refused and gave chase, abandoning the truck in a nearby canal while people fled the scene.

“The drainage ditch did have water, maybe a couple of feet deep,” said Edinburg Police Lt. Oscar Trevino. “And as the officer noted, there were four people that were still inside the SUV while it was submerged in water. Those people managed to get out without any injuries and were taken to Border
Patrol.”

During the search for the remaining suspects, officers were able to apprehend two other individuals who were also handed over to border patrol agents.
