Alton (KFXV) — It looks like Alton residents will have another bill added to their accounts, as the city continues to grow. The city of Alton is 1.5 million dollars in debt after upgrading their Fire Department station and equipment. Despite the use of grants, the city is now collecting a $36 fee per household–citing an ordinance.
Some residents disagree with the new fee.
For the past three years the Alton Fire Department has been fully staffed– upgrading from an all volunteer station.
Officials add this ordinance has been in the books for the last 15 years. This fee will also be collected in 2016 and 2017.
Payment plans will be made available for residents who cannot afford to give the full payment at once.
