A high-speed chase lasting close to an hour, and spanning across much of eastern Hidalgo county. The incident began with a kidnapping attempt, and ended with the suspect and two victims injured.
Police responded to a call of an attempted kidnapping at ‘Pronto Insurance’ in Weslaco late this morning, that call quickly lead to a high-speed chase with a red pickup truck.
The suspect driver, identified only as a 34-year-old man, led a caravan of at least 20 police units, and a DPS chopper, on a pursuit spanning about 70 miles across several cities.
During the high-speed chase, authorities say the man displayed what appeared to be a gun–it was later found to be a bb-gun, allegedly used during the aggravated kidnap attempt, where a woman suffered injuries.
Multiple police agencies tracked the suspect down Highway 281 and over to east Expressway 83, while deploying spike steps along the way.
After nearly an hour, the chase ended as the suspect collided with another driver at the intersection of 6th Street and Border Avenue in Weslaco, causing his vehicle to flip over.
Both the suspect and said victim were taken to the hospital.
DPS said it is taking lead in the accident portion of the investigation while the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office investigates the attempted kidnapping.
