Starting today federal food stamp benefits will be trimmed by $5B and it’s going to impact millions of families.

More than 47M are currently under the supplemental nutrition assistance program– or SNAP, including 22M children and 9M elderly or seriously disabled people, according to the center of budget and policy priorities.

The average benefit per person now stands at a little over $133 a month, that amount will now be reduced.

Congress is currently negotiating a farm bill which may lead to more cuts to the snap program.
