MCALLEN (KFXV) — A new building will replace the tents where hundreds of immigrants are housed at the Humanitarian Respite Center thanks to a contribution by the Diocese of Brownsville and Catholic Charities.
The Sacred Heart Catholic Church is planning a permanent location to continue helping the hundreds of immigrants that arrive here daily. The 2 million dollar facility will be located on 16th Street right across the current center.
Before the present location opened it’s doors, many of these undocumented individuals slept on the streets near the bus station prior to their departure. The influx of migrants continues to rise – making the conditions less hospitable.
The building will also help the homeless population of McAllen. Construction is expected to begin next month and completed within 7-10 months.
The Respite Center is always in need of donations and volunteers. For more information on how you can help call (956) 648-6361
