The United States secretary of agriculture announced today, wildfires burned a record number of acres in 2015.

Officials are worried this year will be even worse following early droughts.

In south Texas, naturally occurring fires are rare. The wildfires, or brush fires we see, are typically started by people.

“Most of them are due to a camp fire or illegal burning… People burning trash in their backyard and it gets away from them.”

Fighting brush fire flames is a little different than those of a structure fire.

“The wind can play a big factor… The wind can just carry the fire, depending on the community, it can be even hotter. It’s really dry down here, so it can spread really fast.”

Brush fires can burn through acres of open fields within minutes, leaving behind nothing but charred soil.
