Indians are the underdog in World Series against Cubs

CLEVELAND (AP) — Any other year, against any other team, the Cleveland Indians would be the sentimental choice in this year’s World Series. You know, because of that long championship drought and all. But not against the Chicago Cubs. The lovable Cubbies, who captured the nation’s heart by exorcising curses and winning their first NL pennant since 1945 on Saturday night and are aiming for their first Series title since 1908, are a popular pick. The oddsmakers in Las Vegas have pegged the Cubs as heavy favorites going into Game 1 on Tuesday night. Heck, even First Fan Barack...

Boston Red Sox clinch AL East crown, go worst to 1st again

NEW YORK (AP) — Even though they let a win get away Wednesday night, the Boston Red Sox locked up something more important. And as far as they were concerned, an AL East title was certainly worth celebrating. Boston clinched the division championship despite wasting a three-run lead in the ninth inning of a 5-3 loss to the Yankees. David Ortiz and the Red Sox, who last weekend secured at least a wild-card spot in the playoffs, were assured the crown when Baltimore rallied for a 3-2 win at second-place Toronto nearly 30 minutes before New York completed its...

Brissett would make Pats history as first black QB to start

BOSTON (AP) — From his den in Huntsville, Alabama, Onree Jackson will quietly root to see Jacoby Brissett under center when he watches New England host Houston on Thursday night. Almost 50 years have passed, but Jackson still remembers his excitement when he was drafted out of Alabama A&M in 1969 by the Boston Patriots – the franchise’s first black quarterback. Back then, the team hailed his potential to be “the Willie Mays of pro football.” But he never played in a regular-season NFL game. Now, Brissett could establish a footnote for a franchise born in a city...

David Ortiz, Red Sox agree to 2015 contract plus options

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Big Papi is staying put. David Ortiz and the Red Sox agreed to a 2015 contract Sunday with options for the following two years, a move that means the popular slugger will probably finish his career in Boston. Ortiz, the World Series MVP last season, has led the Red Sox to three championships in the past 10 years. He batted .309 with 30 home runs and 103 RBIs in 137 games last season after missing all of spring training while rehabbing a strained Achilles tendon. The 38-year-old designated hitter has 431 major league homers and...

Red Sox, Yankees trios receive qualifying offers

NEW YORK (AP) — The World Series champion Boston Red Sox made $14.1 million qualifying offers to free agents Jacoby Ellsbury, Mike Napoli and Stephen Drew on Monday, the first deadline day of baseball’s offseason. Thirteen free agents received the offers, up from nine last year. The Yankees also extended offers to a trio of players: second baseman Robinson Cano, outfielder Curtis Granderson and pitcher Hiroki Kuroda. Players accepting are signed for next season. If a player signs elsewhere, his former team gets an extra draft pick at the end of the first round next June as compensation. Others receiving...
