16 years ago today South Padre Island’s Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway collapsed on the night of September 15th 2001 Killing eight people when they plunged from the roadway 80 feet below into the bay. This according to Cameron County officials who identified the man as 47-year-old Eleazar Olvera-Mendoza of Matamoros Tamaulipas, Mexico. The incident happened around noon today and authorities say a man drove his Chevrolet Blazer to the highest point of the bridge, got out of the vehicle and jumped into the water.
