‘Superhero’ 3D printed hands help kids dream in Argentina

BY LUIS ANDRES HENAO BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Being born without fingers can be tough for any child. Getting new ones – especially red and blue superhero themed digits – has made 8-year-old Kaori Misue a vibrant playground star. Flexing her wrist muscles to bend the plastic fingers, she can work with tape and stickers at an arts and crafts class. She can ride a bike, skip a rope and bake pastries with her mom. Her amazed friends have even begged to borrow the 3D printed hand, which looks a little like a cheerily colored Transformers toy strapped to...

Ivanka Trump signals flexibility on paid parental leave

BY MATT O’BRIEN AND CATHERINE LUCEY PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A proposal for paid parental leave championed by Ivanka Trump could go back to the drawing board. What’s more, GOP leaders are considering a tax hike...

Transgender Students Allowed to Go into Restroom of Choice

Transgender students will now have access to the restroom they identify themselves with thanks to new federal regulations. However, there are those who are already opposed to the idea. In a letter sent out by President Barack Obama, all school districts must allow transgender students to use the restroom they identify with. Those districts who wish to oppose to the idea could see repercussions. Under Title Four of the Education Amendment of 1972, schools receiving federal funding may not discriminate based on a student’s sex. With this, President Obama threatened to cut federal money to those who decide to...

Mosquito season brings no urgency for money to fight Zika

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House and Democrats are pressuring congressional Republicans to act on President Barack Obama’s demands for money to combat Zika, but even the onset of mosquito season that probably will spread the virus has failed to create a sense of urgency. Republicans from states at greatest risk, such as Florida, Texas, Louisiana and Georgia, have been slow to endorse Obama’s more than 2-month-old request for $1.9 billion to battle the virus, which causes grave birth defects. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention currently reports more than 470 cases in the continental U.S., all so...
