A bicycle race in Brooklyn came to a screeching halt when a motorcycle stalled in the race lanes, causing a massive pileup. Just moments after the ‘Red Hook Criterium’ race got underway, a pace motorcycle stopped just as the cyclists were reaching sprint speed. Today cyclists across the world took part in the annual ‘ride of silence’–the valley was no exception. One of those local cyclists is pushing for better accountability in hit-and-run cases, such as the one that claimed her husband’s life. It’s been a little over a year since Monette Arguelles’s husband Eddie passed away in a hit-and-run accident. Continuing his legacy riding once again in his name, Monette is not only riding to remind the public about sharing the road, she is collecting signatures for lawmakers to create a statewide system of accountability. That is the concept behind the “Texas Hit-and-Run Alert System” which would provide a description of a suspect involved in a hit-and-run. This is another effort that stems from a movement by the cyclist community to create awareness of road safety. The petition has now reached its goal of 500 signatures.
