McAllen (KFXV) — Hundreds of people at The Sacred Heart Church Respite Center shared a Thanksgiving meal for the first time.
Several local businesses got together to organize a turkey meal for 500 hundred refugees in McAllen, an effort they say is well worth it.

Immigrants like Amparo Linares who left her native Guatemala says she is grateful she made it to the land of opportunities.

Here in McAllen, Amparo received the care she needs while she waits to take a bus to meet with family up north. Sister Norma pimentel explains the humanitarian response from the community is overwhelming.

Since its inception in 2014, the respite center has provided food, clothes and shelter for more than 50,000 as part of their journey.

Sister Norma Pimentel expressed gratitude for the communities response in helping those in need.
