It was during the midnight hours of Wednesday that Hidalgo County Sheriff’s officers made the discovery of the 8 undocumented immigrants locked inside a U-Haul.
One woman and seven men were found inside a U-Haul left on the intersection of Tower and Texas Road in rural Edinburg around 1.30 this morning.
Among arrival, officials noticed the keys were left inside, however the driver was nowhere to be found..
“They went to the back cargo, unlocked it and eight illegal immigrants were inside the bed of the u-haul truck.”
Celina Flores, spokesperson for Hidalgo County Sheriff’s office says they do not know how long these people had been locked inside the truck.
However, none of the undocumented immigrants reported any injuries at the time of their rescue.
“Even though it was during the early hours, it is summertime, and it can reach the 3-digit numbers.”
Jeff Lockridge, representative for U-Haul says a person must be at least 18 years of age, present a valid driver’s license, phone number, and credit card and two forms of meaningful assurance for the return of the vehicle.
The name of the person who rented out the U-Haul has not been released at this time.
