A newly elected official was in court Wednesday, accused of taking advantage of his position to misuse official documents and tamper with evidence.

Eddie Gonzalez turned himself in Tuesday following a grand jury indictment. The Edcouch alderman was at the Hidalgo County Courthouse, where he pleaded not guilty to felony charges stemming from allegations of leaking inside information to a waste management company back in 2011 and altering its bid to get a contract.

Gonzalez’s trial is scheduled to begin January 27.

If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison.
