DONNA – Met with the recipients of this important award, needless to say, they were the only three students in the Rio Grande valley to receive it.
Seniors Christopher Michael Castillo, Derek Garza and Maximilian Muniz say they feel a weight has been lifted off of their shoulders financially.
They were awarded with the gates millennium scholarship earlier this month.
The scholarship established by bill and Melinda Gates was designed to offer minority students financial liberation in an effort to promote higher education. Donna high school principal Nancy Castillo says the scholarship isn’t an easy one to receive.
“5200 applicants tried out this year and only 1000 were selected. In the state of Texas over 100 students were selected but Donna High School had three and that’s an honor,” explains Nancy Castillo, Donna High School principal.
This scholarship reduces financial barriers for students like Derek Garza who says he’s got many years of education ahead of him.
“I can go to school worry free and i want to be a Doctor a surgeon.. So I won’t have to worry about loans now or debt,” says Derek Andrew Garza, Gates scholarship recipient.
Student Christopher Castillo who plans to attend A&M University in the fall encourages. Others to apply as well
“It’s easy just go online and fill it out,” adds Christopher Castillo, Gates scholarship recipient.
We’d like to take the time to congratulate this high school seniors and we wish them the best of luck. If you would like to know more about the scholarship or apply you can visit. Gmsp.org.
