A pre-trial conference was held today in regard to a citizenship battle between the state of Texas, the Federal Government and a former drug kingpin.
The initial pre-trial conference for the case involving Juan Garcia Abrego was held via telephone in the Brownsville Federal Court. Garcia Abrego is suing the federal government and the state of Texas, citing that he wants both entities to declare him a U.S. citizen. Garcia Abrego claims to have been born in la Paloma, Texas, while the state and Federal Governments maintain that he is a Mexican national, born in Matamoros, México. Both the federal government and the state have filed motions requesting to be dismissed from the case. A ruling has yet to be made.
