Two illegal immigrants trying to enter the country by swimming across the Rio Grande nearly drowned, one of them was rescued by border patrol agents.

These are photographs of the rescue sent to us by U.S. customs and border protection.

The incident happened early this morning in Pharr when agents working near the river encountered two illegal immigrants who attempted to avoid apprehension by swimming to Mexico.

One of them made it across but the other was struggling to stay above water. An agent threw the man a life jacket, pulled him ashore and began to give first aid until ambulance arrived.

The man believed to be from El Salvador was transported to a hospital for treatment.
