Officials report more than a dozen home invasions across the Rio Grande Valley since the beginning of the year. Although it sounds like a high number–police say it’s better than previous years.

Although there have been 17 home invasions reported since January, the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office says that’s actually a decrease from past occurrences. The scenarios of these home invasions are oftentimes very similar.

Home invasion targets are also sometimes injured. According to the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office, out of the 17 reported home invasions, 10 arrests have been made… And only three cases have been closed.

A lack of leads and evidence has police utilizing additional strategies to investigate cases. They hope the new group will allow for more arrests–which will in turn reduce the number of home invasions. However if you are a target of a home invasion–there are some tips to follow.
